Qarawiyyin Mosque
Fez, Morocco (AD 857 / AH 243)
Founded in the 9th century by Fatima Fihriyya, the daughter of a wealthy merchant from Kairouan, this is the largest mosque in Africa. Surrounded by a celebrated university, it took on its distinctive dimensions and ornamentation in the Almoravid period (AD 1056–1147) when the building was altered and enlarged. In the Middle Ages it was a centre of knowledge and science for the entire Mediterranean region
