The Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) describe what is essential for students to achieve from Years Prep to 10 in Victorian schools. The VELS provides a whole school curriculum planning framework that sets out learning standards for schools to use to plan their teaching and learning programs, including assessment and reporting of student achievement and progress.

This list includes the books, kits, software, CD-ROMs and videos that are listed in the Resources section in all Technology key learning area units. The resources support learning activities, include background information on technology concepts and provide alternative and extension activities. Stories are used as springboards for ideas for primary students. Internet sites, resource people and suggested excursions are also found in the Resources section in the Technology units.

The author is currently undertaking a three-year longitudinal study of the development of technological capability in twenty-four children during the first three years of their primary education (age5-7). This initial paper addresses the underlying problematic issues, which impact on the identification and evaluation of technological literacy in young children, and considers the affect of these on research in this field.
